The School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Cape Coast has successfully undertaken its first community outreach under the Optometric Service and Community Outreach for Practical Experience (OPTO-SCOPE) project. The exercise was held on 25th February 2026 at the Kakumdo and Bremang CHPS facilities in the Central Region.
The Department of Clinical Optometry focuses on training students to become proficient eye care professionals, equipped with the skills to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of visual and ocular conditions. Through both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training, students engage in patient-centered programs aimed at providing comprehensive eye care.
Specialized courses within the department include pediatric and geriatric optometry, low vision rehabilitation, and post-surgical co-management, which prepare students for a wide range of career paths in optometric care. The MPhil and PhD programs in Clinical Optometry offer advanced clinical training and research opportunities, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for roles as clinical practitioners or academic researchers.
Students gain clinical experience through rotations at the Department of Optometry Eye Clinic, UCC Eye Clinic, and other affiliated hospitals, providing real-world exposure to patient care. This integration of clinical training and academic study ensures that graduates are not only knowledgeable in theory but also proficient in practice.
